What lorem ipsum is
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as placeholder text in design and publishing. It comes from a section of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC, with words cut and rearranged so it no longer means anything. Typesetters have used versions of it since at least the 1960s, when it appeared on Letraset transfer sheets, and it later became standard in desktop publishing software.
Designers use it because it looks like real text. It has a natural mix of short and long words and realistic sentence lengths, but it does not distract reviewers into reading and editing the copy.
When to use placeholder text, and when not to
Placeholder text is useful for:
- Testing typography: line length, line height, and how a font looks in a paragraph.
- Checking that layouts handle long and short content without breaking.
- Filling a prototype or demo so it looks complete.
Use real or realistic content instead when:
- You are testing usability. People cannot judge a page's clarity if the words have no meaning.
- Text length is critical, such as buttons, navigation, and headlines. Real labels are often much longer or shorter than the placeholder.
- The design will be translated. German text is often about 30% longer than English, and placeholder text hides that problem.
Tips
- Generate a few words for button labels, and a few sentences for card descriptions, to match the real content length.
- Use the Word Counter to check that placeholder text matches the length the final copy will have.
- Search for "lorem" before launching. Placeholder text left on a live site looks unfinished and can hurt search rankings.
Frequently asked questions
Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
Partly. Most words are real Latin, but they are cut and reordered, and some are not real words at all, so a Latin reader would not understand it.
Can I use the generated text commercially?
Yes. Lorem ipsum is based on a text over 2,000 years old and is in the public domain.
Is the text generated on your server?
No. It is generated in your browser each time you click Generate.
